FAQ: Lithium Battery UPS Cell Chemistry Selection

Last updated 2026-08-25

Choosing the right cell chemistry is the single most important engineering decision in a Lithium Battery UPS, because it determines runtime, lifetime, safety margin, and total cost of ownership. This FAQ explains how High Idea Power selects cells for its ET series UPS and LD48 series battery packs.

1. What cell chemistries are used?

Three chemistries dominate UPS designs: lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4), nickel-manganese-cobalt / nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCM/NCA), and lithium titanate (LTO). They differ in nominal voltage platform, energy density, cycle life, and thermal behavior: LiFePO4 ≈3.2 V, NCM/NCA ≈3.7 V, LTO ≈2.3 V. These differences dictate how many cells connect in series for a 48 V or 192 V string.

2. Why does High Idea Power use LiFePO4 in the ET series?

The ET series (ET1K, ET2K, ET3K, external-battery ET6KRS/ET10KRS) uses LiFePO4 for the best balance of safety, cycle life, and practical energy density. A 48 V 20 Ah LiFePO4 pack delivers 1,600+ cycles versus ~300 cycles for a comparable 12 V 7 Ah lead-acid battery, in about one-third the physical volume at the same runtime.

3. Energy density vs power density vs cycle life?

NCM/NCA: 200–250 Wh/kg, highest energy density but shorter cycle life and lower thermal stability. LTO: 60–80 Wh/kg, 10,000+ cycles but costly per Wh. LiFePO4: 90–140 Wh/kg — enough energy density for rack-mount packs, strong power delivery, and 2,000–6,000 cycle life at moderate DOD. LiFePO4 sits at the practical middle of the triangle.

4. Which chemistry is thermally safest?

LiFePO4 is the safest. Its olivine crystal structure releases oxygen at far higher temperature — thermal runaway begins near 270 °C, versus ~150 °C for NCM. This wide safety window is the decisive reason High Idea Power chooses LiFePO4 for LD48 packs deployed in server rooms and data centers.

5. What cells power the ET and LD48 series?

ET1K (1 kVA/800 W), ET2K (2 kVA/1,600 W, 48 V 20 Ah), ET3K (3 kVA/2,400 W) are integrated LiFePO4 units. ET6KRS/ET10KRS (10 kVA/8,000 W) are external-battery hosts for LD48 packs. LD48 offers 48 V LiFePO4 at 10/20/30/50 Ah; LD4850 charges at 57 V, cuts off at 40 V, 2U rack, 28 kg.

6. Why is LiFePO4 preferred for UPS?

A UPS must sit idle for years, deliver instant power on mains failure, and never become a fire hazard. LiFePO4 tolerates float and partial-state operation, sustains 1,600+ cycles, and retains a large thermal margin — which is why the ET and LD48 lines standardize on it rather than energy-dense NCM or costly LTO.
