DC-DC Converters

Change a DC bus voltage without an AC stage — isolated 2U converters for station and telecom DC panels.

Utility substations and telecom rooms often carry more than one DC bus. A 110 or 220VDC station battery may need to feed 48VDC communication equipment; a 48VDC plant may need a 24VDC control circuit. A DC-DC converter does this without an AC intermediate stage, with galvanic isolation between the two buses.

The RP platform

The RP 2U converter uses dual-transistor forward switching with isolation between modules, so a fault in one module cannot pull down the others. In an N+1 configuration the remaining modules keep the load supplied and share current automatically. A 3½-digit meter option shows output voltage and current locally, and the 19-inch 2U chassis fits standard telecom and power cabinets. Full rated output is maintained from -10 to +50 deg C.

Specifying a unit

Confirm the source DC bus and its actual fluctuation range, the required output voltage and current, the isolation requirement, the number of modules for N+1 redundancy and the available cabinet height. For sites that start from AC mains see Rectifier & AC-DC Power Modules; for AC loads with battery backup see UPS Power Supply.

DC-DC Converters — frequently asked questions

When is a DC-DC converter needed instead of a rectifier?
When the site already has a DC source — a 110 / 220VDC station battery or a 48VDC telecom plant — and equipment on another voltage must be fed from it. A rectifier needs an AC input; a DC-DC converter does not.
Which conversion pairs are supported?
Standard builds include 110VDC to 48VDC and 220VDC to 48VDC, plus 24 / 48 / 110 / 220VDC variants. The input and output pair is fixed at the factory for each order.
Is the output isolated from the input?
Yes. The dual-transistor forward topology and inter-module isolation keep the DC buses separate, which prevents fault propagation and DC insulation monitoring alarms.
Can modules be paralleled for redundancy?
Yes. Modules operate in N+1 parallel with automatic current sharing, so a failed module does not interrupt the remaining modules or the load.
