FAQ: UPS Capacity Planning & Expansion
Last updated 2026-08-25
Proper UPS sizing prevents under-capacity failures and overspending. This guide covers load calculation, power factor correction, future growth planning, single-to-three-phase upgrades, parallel redundancy, and cable/breaker specifications — with High Idea Power real-world examples.
1. How do I accurately calculate total load?
| Equipment | Qty | Watts Each | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rack server (dual PSU) | 2 | 350W | 700W |
| Network switch (48-port PoE) | 1 | 450W | 450W |
| NAS (4-bay) | 1 | 60W | 60W |
| Firewall appliance | 1 | 25W | 25W |
| Total | 1235W |
Apply safety margin: 1235W × 1.25 (growth) × 1.1 (PSU inefficiency) ≈ 1700W. The C3K (3KVA/2400W) provides comfortable capacity with 700W headroom. Going to C6K (6KVA/4800W) accommodates 2–3 more servers.
2. How does power factor affect sizing?
Modern Active PFC equipment draws at PF ~0.95–0.99, but the UPS must be sized by watts:
- 600W load: MT1000 (1000VA, PF 0.6 → 600W usable — at limit) vs C1K (1000VA, PF 0.8 → 800W — comfortable)
- 1200W load: would need ~2000VA standby vs N2K (2000VA → 1600W) or C3K (3000VA → 2400W)
Online C/N series with PF 0.8 give substantially more usable capacity per VA. The C1K output PF reaches 0.9 at 30°C ambient — even more usable watts in climate-controlled rooms.
3. How much spare capacity for future expansion?
Industry best practice: 20–30% spare capacity at deployment. For 800W current load, C3K (2400W) is better than C2K (1600W) — the price difference is small vs. replacement cost later. Modular growth: E1KS-48, E2KS-48, E3KS-48 support external 48V LiFePO4 LD series battery packs for runtime expansion without UPS replacement.
4. When to upgrade to three-phase?
Stay single-phase up to 10KVA (C10K ceiling). Move to three-phase when load exceeds 10KVA: 3C15KSN (15KVA), 3C20KS (20KVA), or MEX 3C340KS. Three-phase enables parallel redundancy unavailable on single-phase.
5. How does N+1 parallel redundancy work?
Two identical UPS units share the load. If one fails, the remaining carries the full load without interruption. Two 20KVA units in parallel with 15KVA load = N+1. Requirements: identical model/firmware, parallel communication cable, equal-length output cabling, professional commissioning. Single-phase E-series does not support parallel — size for N capacity.
6. How to expand battery runtime?
LD Series LiFePO4 packs (LD4810/4820/4830/4850) compatible with E1KS/E2KS/E3KS-48 multiply runtime linearly. C/N series “S” suffix models (C1KS–C10KS) accept external lead-acid banks. Runtime ≈ (Battery Ah × Voltage × 0.85) ÷ Load. E3KS-48 with LD4850 (48V 50AH) at 1200W ≈ 1.7 hours.
7. Cable and breaker specifications
| Model | Max Input Current | Breaker | Min Cable |
|---|---|---|---|
| C1K / N1K | ~6A | 10A C-curve | 1.5mm² |
| C3K / N3K | ~16A | 20A C-curve | 2.5mm² |
| C6K | ~32A | 40A C-curve | 6mm² |
| C10K | ~50A | 63A C-curve | 10mm² |
Use C-curve breakers (not B-curve) — UPS inrush can trip B-curve. Dedicated circuit required. Install external maintenance bypass switch.
